Intermediate refers to a substance that is manufactured and used in chemical processes to produce another chemical substance.

Intermediates are temporary substances that are consumed during the manufacture of a final product or another chemical compound. Throughout the production process, they are completely or partially transformed into other substances.

Their role is limited to chemical reaction processes, where they exist only as part of the manufacturing process and are consumed during the reaction.

Intermediates are generally classified into two categories:

  • Isolated in situ intermediates, which are manufactured and used within the same facility.
  • Transported isolated intermediates, which are transferred to another facility for further processing.

In both cases, intermediates must be handled and processed under strictly controlled conditions.
